What are heat shrink butt connectors?

2026 03/28

Heat shrink butt connectors provide waterproof, durable electrical splices by combining a crimp terminal with adhesive-lined, heat-activated tubing. They are ideal for automotive or marine applications to prevent corrosion and wire pull-out, offering better durability than conventional connectors. They are color-coded by gauge (red 22-16, blue 16-14, yellow 12-10) and shrink to form a sealed, insulated joint.

How to Use Heat Shrink Butt Connectors

  1. Strip and Insert: Strip the insulation off both wire ends about 3/8 inch.
  2. Crimp: Insert the wire into one end of the connector and use a crimping tool on the metal barrel. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Apply Heat: Use a heat gun to heat the tubing uniformly until the tubing shrinks and the adhesive flows out of the ends, creating a watertight seal.
    • Tip: While a heat gun is best, a small torch or lighter can work, but take care not to burn the insulation.

Key Benefits

  • Waterproof/Water-Resistant: The adhesive lining seals the connection from moisture, dirt, and corrosion.
  • Insulated & Durable: The heat shrink tubing protects against abrasion and strain on the connection.
  • Easy Inspection: The tubing is usually transparent, allowing you to see the crimp.

Important Considerations

  • Size Selection: Use the correct size for your wire gauge (AWG) to ensure a proper connection.
  • Temperature Rating: These connectors feature a shrink start temperature of 80°C (176°F) and a full recovery temperature of 130°C (266°F) for installation. Once installed, they offer reliable long-term performance across a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C (-67°F to 257°F).
  • Safety: Work in a well-ventilated area, especially when shrinking the tubing, and be careful of hot surfaces.
