Braided Sleeve Characteristics and Testing Guide

2018 06/26

Braided sleeving is a common component in semiconductors, current amplifiers and electronic circuits. Domestic crystal braided sleeving comes in a wide variety of types with different pin configurations.

When using a braided sleeve with unknown pin arrangements, it is necessary to measure and confirm the correct pin positions, or refer to manuals for detailed characteristic information and corresponding technical parameters of transistors and braided sleeving.

Made from high-toughness, eco-friendly PET monofilaments, this sleeving offers excellent flexibility, wear resistance, flame retardancy and elasticity.

Reverse Characteristic Testing Method

Connect the red lead of a multimeter to the positive electrode of the sleeving and the black lead to the negative electrode. The sleeving is qualified if the meter pointer points to infinity or a value close to infinity.

Forward Characteristic Testing Method

Connect the black lead (internal positive electrode) of the multimeter to the positive electrode of the sleeving and the red lead (internal negative electrode) to the negative electrode.

If the pointer stops in the middle of the dial instead of at zero, the reading is the forward resistance of the braided layer, which is generally expected to be as high as possible. A forward resistance of zero indicates a short-circuit damage.

The braided layer has switching characteristics: when a forward voltage is applied, the resistance is extremely low in the on-state, equivalent to a closed switch; when a reverse voltage is applied, the resistance is extremely high in the off-state, equivalent to an open switch. This switching characteristic can be utilized to construct various logic circuits, and braided layer testing plays an important role in radio detection.

The braided layer of varactor diodes can be used in TV tuners. It can also serve as a limiting component. When applied after NM circuits, its forward voltage drop remains basically stable — approximately 0.7V for silicon transistors and 0.3V for germanium transistors. This characteristic enables it to limit signal amplitude within a fixed range. In addition, the current flow inside the braided layer can regulate the current of switching power supply inductors and inductive loads such as relays.
