Quick Guide: Key Differences Between Glass Fiber Cloth and Glass Fiber Tape

2025 08/23

With the booming development of new energy, high-end manufacturing, and other industries, glass fiber cloth and glass fiber tape—both belonging to the glass fiber family—are often confused. However, they differ significantly in form, performance, and applications. Choosing the right one can effectively improve efficiency and reduce costs.

1. Form: "Sheet-like" vs. "Strip-like"

FFG-PG
Glass Fiber Cloth: Available as large-area rolls or sheets, with a width of 0.5-2 meters (customizable) and a thickness of 0.1-2 mm. It focuses on "sheet-like coverage," such as overall laying for ship hulls and building structures.
FGT-AD
Glass Fiber Tape: Comes as narrow strip rolls, with a width of 5-50 mm (customizable) and a thickness of 0.05-0.5 mm. Its surface features textures (to enhance grip and adhesion), making it suitable for "strip-like wrapping," such as covering pipes and tool handles.

2. Performance: Focused on Different Scenarios

Both products offer high-temperature resistance (-196℃ to 700℃) and insulation, but their performance focuses vary:
  • Glass Fiber Cloth: Boasts strong "sheet strength" (tensile strength and tear resistance), ideal for large-area heat insulation/insulation, such as motor casings and kiln inner walls.
  • Glass Fiber Tape: Excels in "longitudinal tensile strength" and "local adhesion," perfect for small-scale protection, such as insulation for wire joints and heat insulation for pipe seams.

3. Applications: Clear Division of Labor

  • Glass Fiber Cloth: Dominates "large-area, structural" scenarios, including shipbuilding, building fire-resistant ceilings, and reinforcement of chemical storage tanks.
  • Glass Fiber Tape: Focuses on "local, irregular-shaped" scenarios, such as pipe wrapping, tool handle anti-slip, and as an eco-friendly alternative to asbestos tape.

4. Selection Tips

"Choose cloth for sheet coverage, tape for strip wrapping":
  • Opt for glass fiber cloth when large-area coverage or structural reinforcement is needed.
  • Choose glass fiber tape for local wrapping or fitting irregular surfaces.
